Review of MK1 Oarlocks

I used to use Concept 2 sculling gates and tried MK1 for four outings each of around 12 km.

First impressions were it makes a quite a loud sound when squaring – which is good as it makes you aware of which point in the stroke you are fully square by.  I also like the opening / closing mechanism and found it easier than on conventional gates.

The first outing made me slightly worried as I’d also changed my heights and the river was flowing a lot faster than normal.  I was unsure of how much the blade would be locked square, and therefore worried about partially squaring to hold up the boat when moving away from the landing stage.

However I was absolutely fine – the only real issue I had was that it was harder to push my blade  back out into my gate after drawing it across my boat to push-out from the landing stage.

Unfortunately I did not do any testing.  However, doing drills (front stops tapping, various slides lengths with square blades) seemed easier than normal there was more stability when sitting at front-stops, even with a fairly strong stream.

I liked the gates and therefore decided to keep them.
