We just got this email from Pete McConnell whos helping to organise Sir Steve Redgraves latest fundraising challenge for his Charity Foundaction
I have been persuaded by Sir Steve of Marlow that competing with him in the worlds toughest cycle race a week or so before HRR is good preparation, details below:
I am competing in The Race Across America, the worlds toughest endurance bicycle race in a team put together by Sir Steve Redgrave.
Starting on June 12, the race is a non-stop 3,000 mile ride against 74 other teams, crossing from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland in just 8 days. There will be 100,000 feet of climbing across the Rockies and Appalachians, descents into deserts, and endless miles across the prairies and plains of 14 US States.
The team of 8 people including me and Sir Steve are hoping to raise 100,000 for Sport Relief and The Steve Redgrave Fund, thats 1 for every foot of climbing. The Steve Redgrave Fund aims to use the power of sport to bring about positive changes in the lives of disadvantaged children. The Fund currently supports indoor rowing projects in Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Oldham, Sandwell and Southampton and has helped over 100 schools to purchase rowing machines. Training and support helps teachers maximise use of the machines and adds value to all areas of the curriculum, helping to improve confidence, self esteem and learning.
This is a phenomenal race, which only 60% of riders finish and I would like your support to help raise 100,000 for Steves Fund and Sport Relief – that sum of money would enable the Fund to roll out its programme into a further UK city. Donating is easy through the Just Giving page – please support this amazing effort which will help bring the benefits of sport to disadvantaged young people and their communities.
And to follow preparations and the race visit the Redgrave Crew website , follow the team on Twitter or see us on Facebook
Please pass this onto anyone you know who would like to follow the team or make a donation.
Thanks very much for your support…I need it!!
