Harry Mahon was the international coach who first associated himself with Rowperfect rowing machines and used them for all his crews. He was very keen on setting out ‘template’ force curves for his athletes to copy for their own rowing. [If you're interested in Harry and the history of his coaching, read the Harry Mahon Chapter excerpt from Peter Mallory's book, the Sport of Rowing]
During his time in London working at Kings College School Wimbledon Boat Club, he and Tony Brook created a set of template curves which began as a heavy weight man’s force curve but were then scaled back to be appropriate for younger athletes.
They used the Rowperfect Stroker programme in the DOS software to adjust the height and stroke length of the original curve. The set comprises groups labelled A to F and numbered 1 to 6 in each group.
A group of international athletes has provided us with sample curves of their technique when training on the Rowperfect. Here is a zipped file from which you can download them. Most are from the DOS software and a couple are from Rowperfect for Windows software (RPW).
The athletes include:
- Mahe Drysdale NZL (Hwt Man)
- Sarah Winckless GBR (Hwt Woman)
- Tracey Langlands GBR (Lwt Woman)
- Vaclav Chalupa CZE (Hwt Man),
- Teresa Mas de Xaxars ESP (Lwt Woman),
- Greg Searle GBR (Hwt Man),
- Karin Scanlon COL (Lwt Woman)
Thesecan be uploaded into the RPW software to form a template against which you can do your own training.
